St Andrew's URC/Methodist Church, West Midlands – Community Café

This warm and welcoming community café was created in the entrance space of St Andrew’s URC/Methodist Church, Bilston Road, Sedgley near Dudley.

The entrance and the area under the church’s balcony was transformed into the café. Access straight from the roadside was also created. People can now enjoy coffee, tea and chocolate, as well as soft drinks, snacks and cakes.

The café is available for the whole community to use, with a focus on isolated, older, disadvantaged and young people, as well as young families. It is fully accessible and has a toilet for disabled users.

The church is used for a range of community events, groups and activities including a Local History Society and choir concerts. The café is available for people attending these activities, and will also act as an outreach point for young people and an informal point of peer contact for older people.

In 2012 the church consulted the community on what facilities Sedgley needed and the results indicated that there was a need for more children’s and young people’s activities and support and engagement for older people. The café project was initiated to provide a venue where these needs could be met.
